ENGLISH PLANNING FOR THE BYOD COURSE

BRITISH ENGLISH DIFFERENCES

AIM: This lesson is intended to show some of the differences that english learners can find between american and british english in terms of spelling, meaning and pronunciation.

SUBJECT: English for intermediate and upper intermediate.

AGE: Learners from 18 to 30 years.


TIMING: 1.30 HRS

SUBSEQUENT AIMS:

Firstly, Ss are presented a series of words so they can distinguish slight differences with  the english they have learned in Mexico (American english) in order to be introduced to some aspects that make british english a bit different.

Then students can have some practice exercises in pronunciation, they can visualize specific differences in London, capital of the UK.

Finally, students elaborate some exercises and practice choral pronunciation. They also get a set of words that they can identify and even have the meaning in their own language.

WARM UP (15 MIN)

T presents a set of words and writes it on board:

Centre, Litre, Apologise, Colour, Behaviour.

Then T asks the question: What is wrong with these words?

Then T verifies with Ss that there are aspects that make american and british english different such as spelling, meaning, pronunciation, etc.

ACTIVITY 1 (25 MIN)

T presents a set of words so Ss in small groups can distinguish the american version of the word, then contrast it with the british version, Ss exchange outcomes, then determine if the meaning changes or presents only slight differences.

Ss can use their own language in case they don't get the meaning.

ACTIVITY 2 (30 MIN)

British and american english pronunciation.

T present the following link:

Students can learn some of the differences in pronunciation of syllables, spelling, and pronunciation.

T has the activity monitored, Ss have the exercise practiced taking one and one turn.


ACTIVITY 3: (20 MIN)

T has Ss to watch the following tutorial of British accents, in particular London accent.

ASSESSMENT

T elicits some of the exercises on the video and molds them in order to Ss to learn and practice, this exercise is the easygoing type so that after a while, Ss can enjoy the class a bit more.



CLOSURE: T wraps up what was seen in class, like differences in meaning, pronunciation, spelling, etc.
